We do take a Summer Break and normally start back up with all the school things in August. However, we really “school” all the time with all the things we do! We always have a chapter book going in our house and sometimes multiple books! All of my younger kids (Gideon and down) still love picture books too, so I read a lot of those still on a daily basis! I get so much enjoyment in just reading a fun book aloud to the kids. It normally spurs on some conversation or the kids will ask for more chapters to be read! Our goal is reading in the morning before we get going on the day and at night before bed we read a few books and devotional.
Find pockets of time where you make reading happen! Sometimes if you aren’t in the habit of doing this with your kids, you have to set a reminder or always keep the book on the counter or in a place you see often! I will sometimes read while the kids are eating breakfast. This normally ensures they are quiet for most of the chapter, which is nice for the reader! I love Spring days too, we love to read outside! My kids will often do something while I read. Make bracelets, play dough, sand, color, or play blocks are a few favorites around here. Once you establish a habit, you will find it much easier to keep it going!

It is fun for us to keep track of the books we read so I make a little chart in my bullet journal to keep track! The kids have a challenge to get through 100 books this year.
Gideon, Titus and Annie Mae have taken on the challenge and are doing a wonderful job plugging away at the challenge! One book that really helped me get into reading chapter books aloud is Sarah’s READ ALOUD FAMILY book! She has some great helpful podcasts that could be very encouraging and helpful for anyone stuck!
Another suggestion……. just pick up a book, maybe even the first one of a series and read it for 15 minutes a day. Set a timer if you need to and just do it! Make a goal that you are determined to stick to!
Happy Summer! Happy Reading!

Great ideas and encouragement to keep up the reading year round.
Yes! Great ideas and encouragement. We are still in the picture book stage, but I’m planning on adding in a few chapter books to our plan, once we pick back up in August. Heading over to Sarah’s page now.
