Yes! That is a thing! We live in the cute little town and for whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out for our family to live out our dream of raising our kids in the country.
Thankfully we are blessed to get to raise our family one door down from grandparents and I wouldn’t trade that for anything! Getting to grow up having that relationship has been a true gift from the Lord and one that many don’t get to have these days!
Our fourth born child has a natural GREEN THUMB. His name is Gideon, he loves to garden and his favorite color is green! Gardening is his passion! He lights up when he’s out in the dirt growing things! He can’t wait to see what blooms and what first spouts! To see the excitement in his eyes and that real smile is truly precious!
No matter the size of your yard you can certainly find a piece to plant a few veggies. We decided to work on contentment and make our house and yard ours and bloom where God planted us. In doing that we transformed the front yard into a garden area for us to grow beautiful flowers and yummy food! We took part of our front yard and made some garden boxes to plant some veggies. Gideon wanted lots of strawberries so we made one box for a strawberry patch! This year 2023 has been the best year for our strawberries! Despite the rolly pollies getting to them, we get about a bowl a day!
Tending the garden is definitely easier if you have a water system set up, especially in the heat of the Summer! We had some sprinklers set up in our garden beds to make watering easier. Things actually grow if you water, imagine that! Ha!
Currently we are growing corn, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, flowers, 4 blueberry plants (Gideon asked for those for his birthday last year), strawberries, tangerines, Myer lemons, plums, sunflowers, 2 apple trees, cilantro, onions, mint, raspberries, sugar snap peas, blackberries, and Brussel sprouts.
Not only do we have a veggie garden but we have kitties (our Mama cat has birthed two litters already, and that was an amazing thing for our kids to get to see). We kept two of the kittens that she birthed.
We have had chickens for years in our little back yard. Currently we have seven and will be getting a few more. It is so satisfying to collect chicken eggs. The kids get a thrill out of collecting eggs and they are so fresh and yummy! We love watching them waddle around in the yard! One of the newest things we have added which has been a real help is a clothesline! Yup, a clothesline IN THE FRONT yard! We didn’t have a good spot in the back yard for us to stretch out a long clothesline so we just fixed up a nice sturdy one in the front yard!
Just because you live in town doesn’t mean you can’t live a homestead lifestyle! You can make any home in town or even an apartment work for a small garden area. Be content in what God has blessed you with and BLOOM where you are planted!
